r-22 and r410a: what you need to know about refrigerant

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

refrigerant, or freon, is the substance that your air conditioning unit uses to provide cooling in your house. an cooling system is a closed system, so adding refrigerant to your unit should be a onetime thing. however, if your unit springs a crack, you may want to know a little more about the type of freon your unit uses before you decide on a costly rebuild.

air conditioning season is right around the corner and for many of us the cooling system is still the last thing on our minds. however, many of us also know that in a matter of a couple months we will be relying on that unit for our comfort and in some cases our safety and security as well. last warm seasons was brutally hot, and here at four seasons, we found thousands of air conditioners that were on their last leg. many property owners opted for temporary repairs instead of system replacement, and odds are the system is not going to be working when the warm seasons heat finally calls for its use.

refrigerant cracks are to blame

refrigerant cracks are to blame for this problem. most people are still using old r-22 units in their homes, and that type of refrigerant is not only outdated, but it is also out of production. r-22 damages our atmosphere and it has been replaced by non-ozone depleting r-410a. all newly manufactured air conditioners are sold using r-410a, and the supply of r-22 is dwindling. so, as a property owner, this spring you have 2 choices: throw more money into an old system that uses an outdated, earth damaging refrigerant or replace that old clunker with a new r-410a system. when you look at it this way, the choice seems easy, and four seasons is here to sweeten the deal.

best time to buy and setup

late cold seasons and early spring is the off season for any heating and cooling buisness. the weather isn’t so cold that the heater is working hard and it is defiantly not hot enough to need the cooling system. so, this is often the best time of year to purchase a new system! prices are low and scheduling couldn’t be more convenient. when the heat hits, those that waited will find themselves in crisis, and luckily for them four seasons will still be there to help, but you don’t have to wait till the last minute to use our services. call four seasons today, get a new cooling system, and avoid the chaos of the warm seasons heat

winter a/c installation and warm seasons preparedness

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

over the past cold seasons season, thousands of property owners took advantage of some amazing deals that were being offered on air conditioners and furnaces. whether you had to replace the heater and cooling system because of a breakdown or if you simply upgraded to take advantage of last year’s tax credits, you need to have your cooling system looked at this spring by a expert. during the ice cold months of the year it is impossible to setup an cooling system completely, and even if you only had the heater replaced, you still should have the cooling system checked out.

winter’s chill prevents correct installation

refrigerant is the substance that allows your cooling system to replace the hot air inside your house with cool air during the warm seasons. this substance is pressurized in your air conditioner’s coils, and can crack out easily when disturbed by the installation of a heater. by replacing just the heater in your house, there is a point in the installation process where the refrigerant in the cooling system is able to escape. often times the servicemen will reclaim the refrigerant in the a/c before installing the heater in order to prevent the refrigerant from polluting our atmosphere. however, the chilly temperatures prevent the servicemen from refilling the cooling system and calibrating the system. this is also why new air conditioning systems can never be fully installed during the cold seasons. this process requires a temperature greater than 60 degrees in order to get accurate readings and prevent any damage to the air conditioner’s compressor.

start-ups for your new a/c

so, what does this mean for you? well, it means that it is time to call your heating, ventalation, and air conditioning craftsperson! an cooling system start up will ensure that your air conditioning system is correctly charged and ready for the warm seasons season. don’t wait till the warm seasons heat arrives! spring is the best time to get convenient scheduling and it also allows ample time for repairs to be performed before the real warm seasons heat arrives.

what to do if your a/c springs a crack!

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

5 simple steps to take if you puncture the freon lines with your lawn mower, weed whip or any other garden tool:

1.     don’t panic.

2.     leave the area quickly

3.     turn off your thermostat

4.     kill the breaker to your ac

5.     call your heating/ac service buisness

why is freon so important?

freon or refrigerant is the substance that your air conditioning system uses to remove heat from the interior of your house and replace it will cool air. the refrigerant must be kept at a certain level and pressure in order to cool the house correctly, but accidents do happen. lawn mowers and weed whips are the most standard culprits, but freon cracks can be caused by almost any type of damage to the lines that contain this valuable substance.

steer understood of freon cracks

freon cracks are costly, but there is nothing you or anyone else can do to stop the freon from cracking out. the most important thing is safety, and any attempts to stop the freon from cracking out could result in a bad case of frost bite. the freon cracking from your ac is probably about 20, 30, or maybe even 50 degrees below zero. not only will it blister and freeze your skin, but freon displaces oxygen, so you could possibly suffocate or pass out if you’re standing to close to your ac while it is cracking large amounts of freon. the suffocating part is unlikely in the back yard, but stranger things have happened to property owners. the important thing is to stay away from the unit until all of the refrigerant cracks out completely. safety should be your first concern.

quick action could save your system

turning the unit off as quickly as possible at the thermostat and ac breaker might keep the unit’s compressor from sucking air into the system. your ac system will pull outside air into it once the freon cracks out. this will contaminate the systems tubing, coils and compressor with moisture and non-condensable gases. if you are able to kill the power to the unit before a lot of contaminates are pulled in, the rebuild of the system should be easier and cheaper.

call your heating, ventalation, and air conditioning craftsperson asap!

call a trusted service buisness to rebuild the crack as quickly as possible. older systems with r22 freon in them aren’t affected quite as much as the new 410a systems. however, the system still needs to be repaired as soon as possible because the compressor suffers damage if the unit is ran without adequate amounts of refrigerant.

the 410a systems have hydroscopic properties. it will literally suck water out of the air. these new systems use polyester oil. this oil holds moisture and becomes acidic quickly when exposed to the air. that is why it’s important to get a expert out to plug up your system and start to rebuild it as soon as possible. acting quickly can save your air-conditioner from being ruined by a simple mistake. just remember, turn it off and stay away from it until help arrives.
