you should insulate your house when the following occurs:
>you have an older house and haven’t added isolating. consider that only 20% of homes built before 1980s are well insulated.
>the distribution of heat in your house is uneven, cold zones in the cold seasons or hot zones in the warm seasons. adding isolating creates a more uniform temperature and increases comfort by evenly covering your loft across all areas of your house. it is not uncommon to find settling of material if your current loft isolating is more than 15 years old.
>you build a new house, addition, or setup new siding or roofing.
>you pay formidable power bills. you can reduce power cost by as much 33%. by keeping heat in the cold seasons and cool air in the warm seasons from rising past your ceiling and into the loft and losing that heat as it escapes your house. loft isolating creates a barrier that will keep temperatures in your house constant thus your system will run less often, saving power and money. overtime the savings add up significantly.
>you are bothered by noise from outside. isolating muffles sound.
if you have less than r-30 isolating in your loft (11 inches of fiber glass or rock wool or 8 inches of cellulose), you will benefit by adding isolating to your house. in the chicago area you should have isolating with a rating between r-46 and r-60 in the loft (18 to 21 inches). don’t forget the loft trap or access door.
